Greek Students Explored and Used PeLe, Volos

Students from the University of Thessaly tested the Peer Learning Assessment System (PeLe) on March 12, 2012. Knut Bjørkli from HiST provided a 2 hour demo session by use of two way video to the class in Volos, which MSc. Hariklia Tsalapatas are currently teaching this semester. 25-30 students participated in the demo. At the end of the demo session, they solved a test by using PeLe at their mobile devices. This test was delivered by use of video in combination with response technology, from HiST in Trondheim, and created a lot of engagement and fun.

The Greek students are in their 4th year of their computer science studies, and want to specialize in technology-enhanced learning. They are looking for relevant demonstrations of on going international projects in order to learn about new, emerging methods and services. They could during the demo test and experience the implementation of the services, as well as the added value by using pedagogic methods where they may get a second chance if they select the incorrect answer. The computer science class got insight into the design and the technical implementation of the services. They appreciated the focus on the software development, which high-lightens end user needs.

The students liked the training session; they become engaged and enjoyed using the new assessment services. They believed it was a very innovative idea within technology enhanced learning, even though the penetration rate for Smartphones are still low in Greece. This will change soon, whereby they may start using such training methods.

The teacher, Hariklia Tsalapatas, reports that it was very good for the class to look into the technical and methodological development process, to experience a different and modern way of thinking, and get new ideas for use of mobile technology in assessment for learning.

The picture shows two students in Volos using PeLe to solve a test on their mobile device. The students consider start using the response technology from the EduMecca- and Done-IT projects during the presentations of their final projects, as the classmates are supposed to evaluate each other.

SRS 2.0, PELE 1.5, Eval 1.0 and iLike 1.0 are available for use.
